Narrated by Theodore Bikel, this documentary is an excellent introduction to the history of Soviet Jewry. Scenes and interviews with recent Jewish emigrees, on their way across Europe to Israel, are interspersed with flashbacks of Russian Jewish history related through paintings, still photographs, film footage, and music.

Topics include the history of Jewish settlement in Russia; Jewish life under the tsars; and the religious, cultural, and political movements (Hasidism, Haskalah, Zionism, Socialism, and Communism) which transformed Russian/Soviet Jewish life.
