A classic Woody Allen comedy with a serious theme. Allen is a nebbishy guy enlisted by blacklisted writers to put his name on their scripts during the 1950s McCarthy era, leading to various hilarious complications.

The movie's original screenplay was written by blacklisted writer Walter Bernstein and many of the stars (Martin Ritt, Zero Mostel, Herschel Bernardi, Joshua Shelley, and Lloyd Gough) were also blacklisted.
