Synopsis
Profiling Hassidic punk rockers, Yiddish street performers, African-American Jewish activists and more, Punk Jews explores an emerging movement of provocateurs and committed Jews who are asking, each in his or her own way, what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. Jewish artists, activists and musicians from diverse backgrounds and communities are defying norms and expressing their Jewish identities in unconventional ways. In the process, they are challenging stereotypes and breaking down barriers. Meet Yishai, lead singer of Moshiach Oi; Radical performance group, the Sukkos Mob; the renegade Orthodox participants of Cholent; the Amazing Amy Yoga Yenta; Kal Holczler, founder of Voices of Dignity; and African American Jewish hip hop sensation Y-Love.

The production of Punk Jews was completed following a successful Kickstarter campaign. Punk Jews has already established a major community following utilizing crowdfunding, social networking, and new media, as well as traditional community organizing tools. Festival & special screenings will both benefit from and contribute to the ever growing Punk Jews movement.

About the Filmmakers
Jesse Zook Mann is an Emmy-Award winning documentary producer and cinematographer who recently produced the NBC series “My First Time.” Mann was also field producer on MTV’s The Vice Guide to Everything, shooting segments on topics including Palestinian car thieves and the Russian mafia. Mann has produced segments for the NBC shows “LXTV 1st Look” and “Open House” and he co-produced Splitting Hairs, a documentary on the world beard and mustache championships, which screened at Silverdocs 2009.
Evan Kleinman earned four Emmy nominations for his work as a producer for the NBC lifestyle shows “LXTV 1st Look” and “Open House.” Kleinman receiving a BA from Ithaca College and has worked as an editor and cinematographer for several films, including Race to Execution, a PBS Independent Lens film about the death penalty. In 2011, Kleinman released his first feature film, We Are Still Here. Evan also produces commercial work, music videos, and online media for New York Magazine, Broadway.com, fashion brands, PR companies and musical acts.
