Part I 1908-1948 (87 minutes)
Part II 1948-present (37 minutes)History of Tel Aviv-Jaffa
Produced in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Tel Aviv, the two-part film Tel Aviv-Jaffa explores the rich and complex history of Tel Aviv and Jaffa.
Israeli TV celebrity Modi Bar-On hosts this fast-paced, lively film, which intercuts a treasure trove of archival film and photos with those of contemporary Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv-Jaffa was produced by veteran Israeli documentary filmmakers Anat Zeltser and Modi Bar-On.
Exploring the development of Tel Aviv from its beginning as an unpretentious neighborhood on the outskirts of Ottoman Jaffa through its the present status as one of world’s vibrant and modern cities, the film also documents the fate of Jaffa, the city that gave birth to Tel Aviv and was subsequently engulfed by it. Tel Aviv-Jaffa portrays the plethora of national conflicts, political tensions and cultural contradictions that makes the city unique. Experience as well the architectural gems of the modern movement-inspired White City, named by Unesco as a World Heritage site.
Tel Aviv-Jaffa doesn’t leave out the less glamorous historical moments, such as the collapse of the trees lining the “boulevard” created to impress Winston Churchill, a building design miscalculation in the city’s sewage pipe that kept swimmers barred from the ocean for a decade, and the ticket Meir Dizengoff received for skinny-dipping in the Mediterranean.
